Home

I met Craig and Kari when they presented at an autism support group meeting.  One of many memorable things Kari said was, “Don’t worry, we will accept your child.”  I was worried.  My five children ranging in age from 8 years to 9 months are a diverse group with different disabilities.

Many who claim to be able to handle anything have turned my children away.  A special education tutor (who charges are fortune) said there was nothing she could do with Brittany.  The social skills instructor where 4 of my 5 children receive therapy said Shannyn was too wild for social skills class.  Craig and Kari have a sincerity and fearlessness about them.  I wondered if our family had met their match.  Now, after several months of music therapy, I believe they have.

Brittany (8) uses about 25 words and word approximations.  She is considered nonverbal.  Brittany’s response time to questions has improved and she is also answering yes or no, not just repeating what the speaker says.  The most important change is the way Marissa interacts with Brittany.   Brittany expresses her opinion, makes choices, waves streamers and plays instruments.  Brittany does what the other kids are doing and it is good for Marissa to see.  At home she interacts with Brittany more.  I know it’s carrying over from music therapy.  We are grateful for the improvements and thrilled with how the interaction carries over to our home.

Shannyn is trying a new music therapy partner.  It is my dream for Shannyn to connect with someone her age outside her family.  Shannyn has come a long way from her first visit.  Deming is doing great.  His vocabulary is exploding.  Like Shannyn he struggles with self-regulation.  I believe Deming has found a friend in Carter.  He’s Deming’s first friend.

Thank you, Kari and Craig.  You said, “We will accept your child,” and you have, each and every one.  You have also made it easier for them to be who they are, easier for us to be who we are together, and we are at least one step closer to going out into the world and trying to be accepted by others.

Thank you,

Pam, Deming & Family
