Music What?

Music can be beneficial for anyone.  Music provides immediate gratification and demands nothing in return.  Music therapy is success oriented and often brings out the highest level of functioning in a client.  Emphasis is placed on strengths, which are used to address each individual’s area of need.  Music therapy consists of using music in a skilled manner to overcome challenges in behavior, socialization, communication, physical and emotional well being, sensory motor skills and/or cognitive functioning.  Music is used to create a connection between the client and the therapist and between the client and the music.

Music...

  • Is an inherently pleasurable composition of repetitive and predictable sequences.
  • Has an expressive and non-verbal communicative ability.
  • Communicates with people subconsciously.
  • Initiates muscle relaxation.
  • Alters the pulse.
  • Activates high levels of neurons producing increased long-term memories.
  • Assists the brain's process of integrating and comprehending sensory stimuli.

Music Therapists

Music therapy is the prescribed use of music and music related techniques to assist and motivate a person towards specific, non musical goals.  Music therapists are skilled at improvising and arranging with a wide variety of musical styles and instruments and have specialized training in the use of rhythm and melody to improve psychological and physiological wellbeing.  A qualified music therapist has graduated from one of 70 universities with a bachelor, master or doctoral degree in music therapy, including a six-month clinical internship and successful completion of the board certification exam every five years.
