Music therapy provides an opportunity for successful experiences. Emphasis is placed on strengths, which is used to address each individual’s area of need. HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? Autism, Learning, Developmental and Physical Challenges Music is highly motivating and engaging and is used as a natural reinforcer for desired response. Music can stimulate a reduction in negative and/or self stimulatory response and increase participation in more appropriate and socially acceptable ways. Music can enable those without language to communicate, participate and express themselves non-verbally. Music provides concrete, multi-sensory stimulation (auditory, visual and tactile). The rhythmic component of music is very organizing for the sensory systems. Music can assist in improving fine and gross motor skills as well as motor planning and awareness and control of the body. The interpersonal timing and reciprocity in shared play, turn taking, listening and responding to another person are augmented to accommodate and address individual styles of communication.
Emotional and Behavioral Disturbance Music is inherently non threatening providing an inviting medium to explore feelings, behaviors and issues from self-esteem to severe emotional dysregulation. Music can improve social functioning, awareness and cooperation and decrease disruptive behaviors. Reality orientation is improved. It can improve emotional responsiveness and communication deficits. Clients are helped to develop coping skills, reduce stress and express their feelings.
Stress Management, Anxiety Disorders and Depression Music can alter mood states and improve heart rate and systolic blood pressure. Music can alter electrophysiology and biochemical measures of depression, specifically the right frontal EEG activation and stress hormone (cortsol) levels. All cranial nerves lead to the ear, which explains why soothing musical harmonics induce states of deep relaxation and directly affect breathing, the voice, the heart rate and digestion.
Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke Victims Music stimulates dead cells in the brain that have been damaged after a brain injury. Music can organize and reorganize cerebral function when it has been damaged. If the victim is unable to talk or move areas of their bodies, music can stimulate the areas of the brain that regulate these functions. Music is used to decrease the agitation that is common with these diseases.
Senior Citizens Music is an excellent outlet to provide enjoyment, relaxation, relief from pain, and an opportunity to socialize and reminisce about music that has had special importance to the individual. The geriatric population can be especially prone to anxiety and depression as they experience loneliness from isolation and loss and pain from chronic illness. |
